Project Description

For many years now, the music academies and opera studios in Freiburg, Strasbourg and Basel have been training students, who will in the future orient themselves professionally in the area of opera at an internationally high level: Singers, pianists as répétiteurs and conductors. In the associated courses of study the annual opera productions at the universities or the associated municipal theaters play a central role  in addition to singing and instrumental instruction. At the same time, the curriculum includes artistic and theoretical subsidiary subjects that prepare students for their future profession.

The "Opéra TriNational" project uses the spatial and content-related proximity of the participating cities and institutions to create added value on various levels. The participating cities or universities will alternately host various activities in the context of opera education:

  • One pillar of "Opéra TriNational" are the opera productions. While the students rehearse and perform an opera and its roles at the host location, they are visited by a group of students from each of the two partner universities. These students observe the rehearsals and performances. This opens up a space for productive exchange and artistic criticism beyond institutional and national borders.
  • These visits are prepared and accompanied by a workshop in which teachers and opera professionals demonstrate the strengths of their respective cities and institutions in the form of master classes and guest courses: Freiburg university teachers and theater professionals contribute expertise in the fields of voice physiology and historical performance practice, Basel provides experience in the areas of opera coaching and conducting, and Colmar offers a deepening of knowledge in the performance practice of French opera repertoire.
  • These workshops result in concert programs in collaboration with students and teachers from the participating universities, which are not only performed at the location of the respective workshop, but also in the other participating venues. Here, the participating singers have the opportunity to apply their newly acquired skills and abilities in front of a foreign audience.
  • Two more extensive projects are the focus of the trinational collaboration: a staged opera concert (spring 2022) and a major final production (early summer 2023).
