IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO

Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801)
IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO - The secret marriage
Dramma Giocoso in two acts
In Italian with German surtitles
Text by Giovanni Bertati after the comedy "The Clandestine Marriage"
by David Garrick and George Colman
First performance: 7 February 1792 at the Burgtheater in Vienna

Carolina and Paolino share a big secret: they got married secretly two months ago. When they finally decide to reveal their secret in front of Carolina's family, countless misunderstandings and confusions ensue - Carolina's title-addicted father, the rich aunt who covets Paolino, Carolina's jealous older sister, and finally an impoverished and confused count.

The neapolitan Domenico Cimarosa composed more than 80 operas, most comic in nature. "Il Matrimonio Segreto" is his most famous work: after its triumphant premiere, the work was quickly reprised throughout Europe. This chamber play is still considered one of the most brilliant comic ensemble pieces: it is regarded as a link between Mozart's cheerful dramas and the opera buffa of Rossini and Donizetti.
