Freiburg Opera Studio
Since the winter semester 2016/2017, Freiburg Opera Studio, a four-semester postgraduate degree program offered by Freiburg University of Music and Freiburg Theater, has been in existence. It offers particularly talented young singers the opportunity to gain their first professional experience at a German theater with a music theater department while perfecting their technical skills at a renowned university. It pursues the concept of integrating professional practice with modern university teaching that is tailored precisely to the individual needs of the students.
Freiburg Opera Studio is an exclusive focus within the concert exam degree program at Freiburg University of Music and is aimed at outstanding vocal students with a master’s degree. In exceptional cases, students with a bachelor’s degree who show promise of exceptional artistic development may also be accepted.
Students at Freiburg Opera Studio receive a scholarship from Freiburg University of Music, which means that they do not have to pay any tuition fees, as well as a scholarship from the TheaterFreunde Freiburg to contribute to their general living expenses.

Students specializing in the Freiburg Opera Studio program are enrolled at Freiburg University of Music and receive one hour of instruction per week from vocal professors at the university. This instruction may include traditional voice lessons as well as various forms of coaching, rehearsal supervision, stage work, and so on. The aim is to provide vocal coaching by the university’s professors based on a fundamental acceptance of the vocal independence of advanced students, with the specific form of this coaching being developed in consultation with the respective student.
During the first semester, the responsible examination committee determines which further coursework is to be completed by the student.
Freiburg Opera Studio aims to prepare advanced vocal students specifically for a career in opera. On the one hand, singers can gain their first professional experience with roles in their voice category of varying scope within a professional opera ensemble or opera company. On the other hand, their studies at Freiburg University of Music are tailored to the individual needs of each student, with the curriculum flexibly responding to personal strengths and weaknesses.
From the beginning of the winter semester, students are enrolled at Freiburg University of Music and are also members of Freiburg Theater’s opera company. There, they begin to slowly integrate into the everyday life of the opera house. From this point on, students also receive a monthly stipend of €1,300 from the TheaterFreunde Freiburg.
At the theater, the young singers rehearse roles in their voice category and perform in productions, while at the same time receiving extensive coaching and advice from the theater’s management.
