Description of the master's degree in music education
for instrumental and vocal teachers
Diverse educational processes in music education contexts
The master's degree in music education enables existing music education skills to be deepened while at the same time continuing high-quality individual artistic lessons on the instrument. The range of study content is based on current job-related requirements, for example at music schools, and to a large extent on the individual artistic and educational learning needs of each individual student.
For this purpose, the curriculum is divided into ten subject areas, which are seen in their concrete relation to and their importance for making music and teaching. These subject areas are:
- Instrumental and Vocal Teaching Practice
- Creative Music Making
- Aural Music Practice and Learning
- Music and Movement / The Body as Core-Instrument
- Elementary Music Education
- Popular Music & Music of the World
- Digital Media & Music Production
- Concert Pedagogy & Education Projects
- Musical Adult Education & Higher Education
- Music and Medicine
In the first semester, mandatory introductory events are offered for all subject areas. Afterwards, the students put together their individual specialization profile from the above-mentioned subject areas, which consists of their own artistic, educational and scientific projects. This individual profile formation takes place in personal responsibility as a self-directed study accompanied by the lecturers. The master’s degree is designed around the idea of returning to the core of a university understanding of education, which is learning through independent research within a community of teachers and learners.
